Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral which primarily forms in botryoidal masses with fibrous banding of lighter and darker shades of green. It was known in Egypt as early as 3000 B.C. and was popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans for ornaments, jewelry, and eye shadow when in powdered form.
