Fair Trade/Handwoven 'Chumil' Basket
Mayan Hands is a fair trade nonprofit organization dedicated to providing economic and educational opportunities to Mayan women and girls so that they can build sustainable futures for themselves, their families and communities, as they continue to live within the culture they cherish. They work with 14 cooperatives, about 200 women, living in different areas of the Guatemalan highlands.
Mayan Hands’ artisan partners named this basket "Chumil," the Kaqchikel word for "star." Skillfully woven from longleaf pine needles, pajón (a native grass in Guatemala), and raffia and cotton thread with a central star design rendered in shades of purple, this basket is beautiful for display but also entirely functional.
